Guidelines of Healthy Eating and Living

Welcome back!

Did you know out of the top ten leading causes of death in the US the top three are related to diet? These are heart disease, cancers, and strokes, which can be preventable with an adequate diet.  On the top ten list two more are related to diet, Diabetes at number seven and liver disease and cirrhosis at number ten.  This means fifty percent of the top ten causes of death can be preventable just by how you feed your body.

It blows my mind how some people could be healthier and have a longer life but chose not to.  Some people are simply not aware how beneficial a healthy diet can have on illness.  Some individuals find it hard, complicating, or have no clue where to start.  I hope through this career (and blog) that I can bring awareness to more people.

“How to eat a healthy diet”

To have a healthy diet you should follow the ABC’s.

A-adequate diet: Essential nutrients, fiber, and calories in sufficient amounts to maintain health.

B-balanced diet: Balancing what you eat with healthy choices to outweigh the added sugars, sodium, and saturated fats in processed foods.

C- calorie diet: Intaking the right amount of calories based on height weight and exercise.

Along with ABC you have to include M and V.

M-moderation: Eating a realistic amount of food in each meal or snack.

V- variety: Eating foods from different food groups to obtain the right balance of nutrients.

Following these guidelines is beneficial to the overall health of our bodies.  If you add in some moderate exercise, like a 30 minute walk, it will add to the outcome of better health.

A few other tips according to Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2015  are:

  • Follow a healthy eating pattern across the lifespan
  • Focus on variety, nutrient density, and amount
  • limit calories from added sugars and saturated fats and reduce sodium intake

These kind of overlap with the ABC’s, which just proves they are affective, right?  I know these steps are easier said than done, but when thinking of your wellbeing its a small price to pay. Following these nutrition guidelines and implementing exercise into your daily life will benefit in every aspect of your life.
